About TheMoney.uz Service

What is TheMoney.uz?

TheMoney.uz is a free online service for comparing currency exchange rates across banks in Uzbekistan. We collect data directly from official bank websites and display it in a convenient format on a single page.

How much does the service cost?

Absolutely free. We don't charge any fees, require registration, or ask for payment to access information.

Where do you get exchange rate data from?

We automatically collect data from official websites of Uzbekistan banks several times a day. Sources include: National Bank, Kapitalbank, HamkorBank, Aloqabank, Ipak Yuli Bank, Asia Alliance Bank, and other licensed banks.

How often are exchange rates updated?

Rates are updated every hour. Banks typically change their rates 2-4 times a day: in the morning at opening, at noon, and in the evening. We track all these changes.

Can I trust your data?

Yes. We don't manually edit data or manipulate rates. All figures are taken directly from bank websites automatically. If you notice any discrepancy, please let us know — we'll check and correct it.

About Currency Exchange

Where is the best place to exchange dollars in Tashkent?

Rates constantly change, so there's no definitive answer. Use our website to compare: on the main page you'll see a table with rates from all banks. Usually, the best rates are offered by Kapitalbank, Ipak Yuli Bank, and Asia Alliance Bank, but it depends on the specific day.

Tip: The difference between banks can be 50-100 som per dollar. When exchanging $1000, that's a savings of 50,000-100,000 som!

What's the difference between buy and sell rates?

Buy rate is the rate at which the bank buys foreign currency from you (you sell dollars, get som)

Sell rate is the rate at which the bank sells foreign currency to you (you give som, get dollars)

The sell rate is always higher than the buy rate — this is the spread (difference) on which the bank makes money.

Example: USD buy rate = 12,500 som USD sell rate = 12,650 som Spread = 150 som

⚠️ Is it legal to exchange currency on the street with private money changers?

NO, it is absolutely ILLEGAL.

Exchanging currency with private money changers on streets, markets, and near shops is a criminal offense in Uzbekistan under Article 177 of the Criminal Code.

Penalties:

• Administrative liability: arrest from 1 to 15 days OR fine of 2.7-5.4 million som + currency confiscation• Criminal liability: imprisonment up to 7 years for especially large amounts

Where it's LEGAL to exchange currency:

• At licensed banks• At official bank exchange offices (over 900 locations nationwide)• Through bank mobile apps

When is it better to exchange currency — morning or evening?

Usually, rates are better in the morning. Banks set rates at 9:00-10:00 AM based on the official Central Bank rate and interbank exchange. By evening, the rate may worsen slightly due to market fluctuations.

But this isn't a hard rule. Check our website throughout the day — sometimes banks adjust rates favorably.

Is a passport required for currency exchange?

Yes, a passport is required when buying foreign currency (when you exchange som for dollars/euros). When selling currency (dollars for som), a passport is usually also required, but not always — it depends on the bank and amount.

Are there limits on currency exchange?

There are no official limits for individuals. You can exchange any amount at a bank. However, when exchanging large amounts (equivalent to $10,000+), the bank may request documents confirming the source of funds — this is an anti-money laundering (AML) requirement.

Can I exchange currency at the airport?

Yes, Tashkent International Airport has bank exchange offices that operate 24/7. However, rates there are usually less favorable than at city bank branches (100-200 som worse). If the amount is small — exchange at the airport for convenience. If large — it's better to go into the city.

About Exchange Rates & Economy

Why does the dollar rate rise/fall?

The exchange rate depends on many factors:

• Supply and demand in the foreign exchange market

• Central Bank of Uzbekistan monetary policy decisions• Inflation in Uzbekistan (currently around 10-12%)• Commodity prices (gas, oil, gold, cotton)• Volume of money transfers (remittances from Russia — about $14-16 billion per year)• Political events in the region• Dollar rate against other currencies in the global market

What is the official Central Bank rate?

This is a reference rate set by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan every business day. It's used for accounting, customs calculations, and statistics.

Important: Banks are not required to exchange currency at the official CB rate. They set their own rates based on the interbank exchange and add their margin.

Official CB rate: cbu.uz/en/arkhiv-kursov-valyut/

What currency is best for savings in Uzbekistan?

It depends on your goals:

US Dollars — stable currency, protection from som inflation (which depreciates by 4-5% annually). Suitable for long-term savings.

Uzbek Som — makes sense if held in a deposit at 18-20% annual interest. But inflation "eats" part of the income.

Tip: Diversify — keep savings in 2-3 currencies to reduce risk.

Can I exchange rubles for dollars?

Not directly. Most banks operate on the scheme: rubles → som → dollars. This means you need to make two exchanges, and the bank will take its commission (spread) on each.

Example:

• Sell 10,000 rubles, get ~1,300,000 som• Buy dollars with that som, get ~$102-103• Total loss: 3-5% of the amount

Technical Questions

Why do rates on your website differ from what I see at the bank branch?

Possible reasons:

• Different timing: The rate on our site updated an hour ago, but the bank changed it 10 minutes ago

• Cash vs cashless: We show cash rates, while some banks have slightly different cashless rates (via cards)• Bank website error: Sometimes banks forget to update data on their website, but the rate at the branch is already new

If you notice a discrepancy — contact us, we'll check!

Does your website work on mobile devices?

• Push notifications about rate changes

• Currency calculator• Home screen widget• Offline mode

In the mobile app: 1. Download TheMoney app (Android/iOS) 2. Go to Settings 3. Enable "Push notifications" 4. Select currencies you want to track 5. Set change threshold (e.g., "notify if rate changed by more than 50 som")

Financial Tips

How not to lose money when exchanging currency?

5 simple rules:

1. Compare rates — use our website to find the best bank 2. Avoid airports and hotels — rates there are 2-3% worse 3. Exchange large amounts at banks, not at market exchange booths 4. Check bills against light — counterfeits are rare but exist 5. Keep the receipt — if you find a counterfeit, the receipt proves you got it from the bank

Is it beneficial to exchange currency before holidays?

Yes, usually more beneficial. Before national holidays and long weekends (Navruz, New Year, Independence Day), demand for currency increases and the rate worsens. Exchange currency 1-2 days before holidays.
